Essence Magazine / Essence Music Festival
The Essence Festival highlights a very special and significant weekend of celebrations because it coincides with how it all started in 1968, when Essence Communications also known as (ECI) founded by Edward Lewis, Clarence O Smith, Jonathan Blount and Cecil Hollingsworth launched Essence Magazine.
Essence Magazine was mainly the initiatives of Edward Lewis and Clarence O Smith who knew overall how african american, black women were never represented correctly and were often overlooked, their determination to aspire a whole nation of black people, at a time where it was truly needed and appreciated, that make it even more deserving and well championed that Essence Magazine became majorly successful.
The first edition of Essence Magazine published in May 1970. it led to over 50, 000 to 1.6 million copies being sold over that first 3 years. and marked the beginning of a venture that would capture the hearts of so many people worldwide and a successful Essence Festival that we can celebrate, and enjoy each year.
Essence Music Festival
In 1995, The Essence Music Festival formed as a one time event, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Essence Magazine. The intend being a jubilant vibe honouring black talents, cultural celebrations.all sharing the same arena, networking and supporting each other, feeling empowered and aspired, seeing black talents being awarded for their achievements and contributions, uniting aspirational, motivational and legendary black Singers, musical artists, and Rappers performing, also welcome were media personalities, business influencers, models.

Since then The Essence Music Festival has transformed spectacularly, which started as a one time event which became the largest successful event of its kind, that has brought over 400,000 people together each year in New Orleans.
In 2007, The Essence Music Festival was still thriving strong, one of the many highlights was when the ex-president Barak Obama, and Hilary Clinton were guest appearances of the night. Another great highlight and a momentous occasion was in 2009 when the honour, dedication and whole event was held for Barak Obama’s inauguration and presidency. Beyonce was the headliner of the event, and it’s always prominent and historical that The Essence Music Festival held that event at a remarkable time.
In 2008, CNN partnered Black in America: Reclaiming the dream alongside The Essence Music Festival, and filmed live footage for a special presentation.

From 2013, The Essence Festival being recognised as more than just a music festival, looking back at highlights and iconic moments. The Essence Music Festival was re-branded and has since been known as The Essence Festival or Essence Fest for short.
